Description
Have you ever sat and watched a woodpecker tapping a tree for ants and other small insects? It is an amazing thing. They knock the tip of their beaks with such precision and rhythm it makes my head ache just imagining how it must be for them. Still they persist and they eat well too.
This Red Bellied Woodpecker doesn't have a red belly at all but his head is so flaming it is an orange blur when he is at work. He happens to be one of my special feathered friends at the bird feeder. I have named him Dart, which is short for Dartanion of the 3 Musketeers. When he plops himself in the middle of the bird feeder all the birds will give him room. They wait till Dart has had his fill because that sharp beak isn't just good for pecking the trees. He is like a well-crafted swordsman keeping his competition at bay. Subsequently Dart doesn't have enemies. I expect it is better to be his friend than his foe.
