Description
My favorite poet of all time is Robert W. Service. I used to think it was because his works from his time in the Yukon spoke to my Canadian soul. No one, living or dead, can discribe the North West like that man could.
Then one day I bought the book of his complete works and read it cover to cover multiple times. Even his works from the war and after into his retirement in the French Countryside gave my heart flutters and still does. So this makes him the greatest poet of all times in my books, although, after reading his biography, I know he never concidered himself a poet. He thought himself as a wordsmith and I also find that to be rather poetic.
The Spell of the Yukon will always be his greatest work in my opinion. There are poems of his that are more famous but if you have ever stood on a mountain peak in the Canadian Rockies and looked down on the world around you to feel the vastness of the wilderness, this poem would speak to your soul too.
